Executive Director
Climax Mine Michael B Long
Climax, CO 80249 Division Director
RE: Modified Design Considerations for 4-Dam Seep
Return System, Climax Mine, Permit No. ,,i=77-493
Dear Mr. Romig:
The Division has completed a review of your letter dated August 18, 1997
in which it is proposed to eliminate the leak collection system from the
approved design for the new 4-Dam Seep Return System. Included with this
proposal is a plan to include leak testing prior to commissioning the
system and to install a pressure drop switch that would shut down the
system in the event of a substantial drop in line pressure. Given the
dramatic improvement in the water quality of the 4-Dam seep since the
tailing removal project was completed, the Division concurs that the leak
collection system previously approved is no longer necessary, and hereby
approves the plan for a modified design described in your August 18, 1997
letter.
The Division recommends that hydrostatic testing using the "Monitored Make-
up Water Test" as described in the Chevron System Testing guidance document
would be most appropriate for testing of the 4-Dam Seep Return pipeline.
Be advised that the Division would not accept testing of the pipeline by
the "Initial Service Testing" method described in that same guidance
document .
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Allen C. Sorenson
Reclamation Specialist
C:\WP51\CL1MAX.PPE
