1111111119919111111111 CLIMAX MOLYBOENJM COMPANY
Climax Mine A unit of AMAX Inc.
October 4, 1993
Mr. Bruce Humphries
Colorado Department of Natural Resources
Division of Minerals and Geology 7 g9
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
475
Re: Technical Revision to Mining Permit # 77;
Dear Mr. Humphries:
Consistent with your instructions, Climax Molybdenum Company requests a technical
revision to the referenced mining permit to document our intention to deposit ore samples in the
sanitary landfill at the Climax mine.
The quantity to be disposed of is about 170 tons or 340 cubic yards. Although this
quantity of material is de minimis compared to the hundreds of thousands of tons of waste rock
which is managed as part of the reclamation plan, this deposition is described for your
information and review.
Information has similarly been provided to the Colorado Department of Health,
Hazardous Waste Division (Glenn Mallory) and the Chairman of the Lake County
Commissioners (James Martin). Approvals for this activity have been granted by both entities.
This correspondence is attached.
As you may note in the attached correspondence, there is a reference to 150 pounds of
radioactive ore samples. Although this material has been characterized and found to be below
levels of concern, we are holding it aside and will not dispose of it until permission is granted
by the Radiation Control Division. Once such permission is received, we will dispose of the
material as part of this technical revision.
We appreciate your offer to expedite this review and notify us this week. We would very
much like to commence hauling the ore samples during the week of October 12th, prior to the
onset of winter conditions.
Sincerely,
E,
Robert R. Dorfler
General Superintendent, Climax Mine
Climax, Colorado 80429 Phone: (719) 486-2150 Telecopier Ext. 540
