I
A MINING INDU5TIZY
5URVIVAL GUIDE
FOP, THE 215T CENTURY
The mining industry has undergone a remarkable transformation during the last decade of the 20th century,
emerging from a record wave of consolidations as a leaner, more competitive and global industry. Yet record low
commodity prices, together with unprecedented actions by the Clinton Administration and the anti-mining lobby
to lock up federal lands from further exploration and development, continue to challenge the domestic mining
industry. It is little wonder that mining companies have continued to focus large portions of their exploration
budgets on mineral development outside the United States. Meanwhile, mining employment in the United States
continues to decline from the levels of prior decades.
What does this changing political, economic and social landscape portend for mining and natural resource
professionals in Colorado and the western United States? The 103rd National Western Mining Conference will
provide a survival guide for miners-identifying both the opportunities as well as the challenges facing the mining
industry. Highlights include the following:
• A special keynote session will feature presentations by North America's top gold mining company
executives: Ronald Cambre, Chairman &CEO of Newmont Mining Corporation and James Komadina,
Executive Vice President& CEO of AngloGold North America;
• The second annual mine managers' forum will address the various mineral sectors in Colorado and the
west: Coal, metals, construction and sodium mineral development. Where are the new opportunities in
Colorado mining? The international mining session will highlight the global activities of the mining
industry.
A session on reclamation, jointly sponsored by the Colorado Mining Association and the Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology, will review advances in reclamation technology and showcase the
outstanding environmental achievements of Colorado mining companies.
• Special sessions on the environment will address key air and water quality issues against the backdrop
of election year politics.
• An open forum on public lands will review the disturbing trends in federal land use regulation. The
session will cover Clinton Administration actions to withdraw lands from mineral entry; the roadless area
conservation rule that threatens to stop any development within the national forest system; as well as
attempts by the Department of the Interior to rewrite the General Mining Laws by administrative decree.
Key congressional staffers will participate.
• Our traditional Reclamation and Safety Awards luncheons will honor the very best practices in environ-
mental, health and safety protection and;
• The welcoming, St. Barbara's Day reception will also honor one individual for outstanding contributions
to Colorado mining.
For more than 40 years, The BROADMOOR in Colorado Springs has received Mobil's Five Star Award for
excellence, the longest of any resort hotel in the nation. For the third year in a row, the resort will serve as the
location for the National Western Mining Conference. A terrific rate of $165 per night provides a unique
opportunity for CMA members to enjoy a true Five Star resort at reasonable prices. Advance registration closes
o October 20, and the room registration deadline is September 29.
7
a
0T0/t,00'd t76T6 SLS 202:01 SOIHddZ19 JNISId:WOdd 0T:60 0002-6T-7F
