The Division received fourth Quarter 2011 Sediment Pond Inspection reports for
the Southfield Mine on December 7, 2011. Four ponds, loadout pond #1, loadout pond #2, pond #4, and
pond #5, are permitted under the Southfield permit.

Pond No. 4 and Pond No. 5 were inspected on September 15, 2011. Pond L1 and Pond L2 at the load out
rd
were inspected September 16, 2011 for the 3 quarter inspections. No problems or concerns were
reported with any of the four ponds during third quarter 2011. However, the report for Pond No. 5, Pond
L1-East loadout, and L2-West loadout note that additional comments are found on the back of the
inspection form. The back side of the forms were not copied and submitted to the Division. Please
provide this information to the Division. All four ponds were dry at the time of the inspection.

Pond No. 4 and Pond No. 5 were inspected on November 15, 2011. Pond L1 and Pond L2 at the load out
were inspected November 28, 2011. All four ponds were dry at the time of the inspection. Pond 5 culvert
inlet at the south end of the pond had been cleared of sediment at the outlet of the pipe. The bottom of the
pond had been graded so that water could flow across the pond. No new trespass or dumping of trash had
been observed in the loadout ponds. Pond inspection for fourth quarter 2011 meets the requirements of
Rule 4.05.9(15) and 4.05.9(17).

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Janet Binns
Environmental Protection Specialist III
(303) 866-3567 ext. 8107
janet.binns@state.co.us

Office of Office of

Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
