Moffat Area Final Pit Ditch
This is the final down drain associated to Moffat Pond. This drainage appears stable, and is
designed wider than the previous drainages. The vegetation is well established. Minor rilling
has developed on the north side that runs to the channel (Photo 8794). Two noticeable gullies,
both approximately 30 yards long and 3 feet deep, have formed (Photo 8795). One gully has
boulders at top which were intentionally placed, indicating that some mitigation measures have
been taken. The other gully appears to heal itself at its base.
"Stringy of Pearls" (SOP) Check Dams
The first two check dams in the SOP are located on the south side of the West Ridge Road. The
spillway at Check Dam (CD) 2 has washed out creating a head cut that is approximately 1.5 feet
deep and six feet long before it encounters the rip rap (Photo 8797). Two 36" culverts connect
CD 2 to CD 3 under the road (Photo 8798). Large rip rap and boulders were utilized at this CD
location.
CDs 3 through 7 are dry with well established vegetation. The channels are lined with
geomatting below the check dams. At some CDs, the geomatting is exposed (Photo 8799). The
banks of these upper CDs are steeper with a narrower, well - defined channel. CD 5 has a steeper
bank that lacks vegetation (Photo 8800). Nick points begin to appear at CD 7 and get wider
towards the bottom CDs. CDs 8 through 11 increase in width as you approach the bottom of the
SOP. There are large areas that lack vegetation, and appear to have recently held water, as
evidenced by some wet ground areas and cracking in the "pond" bed (Photo 8801).
CD 12 was the only dam that contained water (Photo 8802). There is a shorter distance between
the rock channels of CDs 11 and 12 compared to other CDS. CDs 13 through 15 get much wider
near the bottom of the SOP. There are large areas that lack vegetation, and appear to have
recently held water, as evidenced by some wet ground areas and cracking in the "pond" bed.
CDs 16 through 21 contain vegetation (grasses), with each pond having more vegetation that the
last (Photos 8803 and 8804).
The entire SOP is functioning as designed. There is evidence of sedimentation at each dam
location, and the vegetation is establishing itself nicely throughout the system.
Additional Inspection Details:
The mine ID sign at the entrance gate was intact and contained all of the necessary information.
A two -track road appears to have been recently developed off the North Road near its
intersection with the Lower Moffat Road, causing disturbance to a previously reclaimed area
(Photo 8784).
A roadside ditch along the West Ridge Road has significantly eroded and formed a large gully
above the String of Pearls (SOP) that is nearly 200 yards long and at least four feet deep in
