LARRY E. O'BRIAN
FOUNDER
STEVAN L. O'BRIAN
PRESIDENT
November 6, 2012
Dear Michael:
Epviroi)n)ei)t,
071- 19 Q 5= 030
Mr. Michael A. Cunningham
Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety
1313 Sherman St., Suite 215
Denver, CO 80203
NOV 0 7 2012
RE: McAtee Construction Co. - Green Bros Pit No. 2
Adequacy review response #1
On behalf of my client McAtee Construction Company, I am
responding to your October 4, 2012 adequacy review letter. Have
included your review points that needed to be addressed in the
order presented in your letter. This way the questions and answers
will be in the same document for easy reference. If no response
was required, I skipped that section. In addition I have attached
copies of the return receipts for the adjoining owner mailing
notices and the Proof of Publication for the mine.
Four pages have been revised from the original submittal. I
have included one set of the pages showing the revisions as red
text. The capitalized text is added and the struck out text was
removed. In addition, there are copies of these page in final form
for inclusion in the report. Each page is numbered to match the
original but "(revised 11/5/12)" was added to the page number to
distinguish it from the original.
6.4.4 Exhibit D - Mining Plan
2. The applicant has stated that the dredge is capable of mining to depths of 60 ft Exhibit C1 shows
the reclaimed lake in Stage I will be 50 ft deep. Please clarify if the gravel deposit will be mined to
a depth of 60 ft and then backfilled to a depth of 50 ft or if the gravel deposit will only be mined to
a depth of 50 ft
This was a drawing error, I have added the necessary contours to
increase the depth on the map to match the text. A revised copy of
Map Exhibit C -1 is attached.
3. The applicant has stated that mining with a dredge results in pit walls with a natural angle of
repose of 2.5H:1 V. The applicant also states that the mining method will result in an overhang
which will need to be removed using explosives. Please clarify this discrepancy.
After discussing this with the company that mined for McAtee it
seems that the overhang occurs as reject sand is returned to the
lake area not as mining occurs like originally described. The
reject sand builds up leaving a void that will eventually collapse
but in some cases it creates an unsafe overhang that cannot safely
be removed using mechanical methods. The minor charge used causes
the shelf to slough off to its natural angle of repose.
