Mr. Ronald Zuck
September 5, 1980
Page 3
tunnels, interceptor canals, control structures , decantation systems
and pumping facilities? Now much money is required? Are these items
necessary in perpetuity? Now much maintenance is required?
11 . Who will maintain and operate post-mining water treatment facilities?
Who will pay the estimated $500,000.00/year operating costs? Now
long will water treatment have to be continued?
12. With so many long term post-mining, cost and maintenance items, when
can the area properly be considered reclaimed? Reclamation implies
maintenance and cost free.
H. Reclamation Plan - 10
1 . What is the current status of the alpine seed mix development pro-
ject? Pg. 10-:.
2. is it possible for the company to harvest enough alpine seed from
adjacent areas to reclaim alpine disturbances?
3. The statement, ''an alternative vegetation will be composed (if species
from the Climax seed mixture and natural invaders" is not adequate
for alpine revegetation. Pg. 10-2.
4. wilA t ay'e- the possibilities of Climax developing their own high
altitute seed source composed of alpine grasses and forbs?
5. Please address the possibility of using lichens on rock faces for
esthetics,
G. What will be the probable grade within 5 feet above to 10 feet
below the water line with the open pit pool? Now large and how deep
is it anticipated that this pool will be? Please describe the grade
and stability of the pit walls above this Clory Hole lake. Pg. 10-3.
7. Please address the use of Gabious in greater detail , keeping in mind
that depending upon the nature of the slope, they may or may not be
considered as fincl reclamation. Pg. 10-4.
8. On the shrub plantings, we need a more definitive statement as to
what you would plant now if you had to reclaim it now. Also, we need
an indication of the pattern of planting that would be used. Pg. 10-6.
9. What is your best estimate of the duration of the fertilizer mainte-
nance program? Pg] . 1C-7.
10. Since 1977, what studies have been done on sewage sludge? Has a
source for properly digested or stable sewage sludge been found yet?
Exactly what does Climax plan to do at this time as fer as the use of
sewage sludge is concerned? Pg. 10-7.
11 . What studies have been done on salt and heavy metal uptake by plants
growing on tailing material?
12. How much topsoil is available to aid the reclamation of Mayflower
tailing pond, and the base of the low grade ore stockpile? Pg. 10-1.
13. Climax needs to make a commitment on the following items, a technical
revision can be submitted if research shows a need to alter these
commitments. :
a. Depth of topsoil and depth of waste rock covering tailings.
b. Uses and rates of amendments.
c. The species seeds and plants to be used above and below timberline.
d. Methods, procedures and precautions during preparation, planting
and maintenance phases of reclamation.
14. Please describe in detail the plans for grading, contouring and
revegetation of haul roads on level and steep terrain. Pg. 10-10.
