A. A primary goal of the Native Plants Program at
Climax is to provide " starter seed" of proven
species to the Meeker Environmental Plant Center
so that the Center may subsequently provide seed
to farmers to allow them to produce the seed in
commercial quantities. Seed of native alpine
and subalpine species is slowly becoming commer-
cially available.
5. Q. Please address the possibility of using lichens
on rock faces for esthetics .
A. With the assistance of outside experts, we
recently initiated a study to 1) identify native
lichens, 2) evaluate their respective roles in
the colonization process , and 3) evaluate their
potential to aid in the artificial revegetation
of rock exposed by the mining operation. We
will next conduct an extensive and intensive
literature search. We hope to eventually
undertake laboratory, greenhouse and field
investigations into techniques of propagating ,
nurturing and dispersing lichens .
6. Q. What will be the probable grade within 5 feet
above to 10 feet below the water line with the
open pit pool? How large and how deep is it
anticipated that this pool will be? Please
describe the grade and stability of the pit
walls above this Glory Hole Lake .
A. IAs already approved by the Board,; the grade in
the vicinity of the water line will be anywhere
from 320 ( 1. 6:1) to 450 ( 1:1) , depending on the
elevation of the lake . As noted above , we have
ft` not proposed any changes in this portion of our
plan . We estimate that the water pool will be
from 400 to 600 feet deep. The Open Pit is
mined at the angles indicated above, so the
walls should remain stable. Any attempt to
further flatten the slopes during the post-
mining period would be impracticable.
7 . Q. Please address the use of gabions in greater
detail , keeping in mind that depending upon the
nature of the slope , they may or may not be
considered as final reclamation.
-15-
