The Red Dirt Pit was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (Division) as
part of the Division's monitoring inspection program. Mr. Bill Clark with Grand County Department of Road
and Bridge was present during the inspection.
The Red Dirt Pit is located approximately 11 miles northwest of Kremmling, Colorado on County Road 19 (FR
100). The Red Dirt Pit 110c construction material reclamation permit was approved by the Division on June
18, 2008. The northwest corner of the site was partially mined in the past by an unknown operator. The
approved 110c permit expands the affected area to the southeast from the old mine area for a total permit
size of 9.99 acres.
The stand of doghair lodge pole pine trees were removed from the permitted area. The trees are volunteering
back at the site. A large pile of tree cuttings were observed during the inspection above the mining face. The
site was closed for season due to a contract condition with the U.S. Forest Service and the inaccessibility of the
site during the winter. The site has been mined to the southeast corner of the permitted area. Mining will
continue to the west in the future.
The approved post mining land use for the site is rangeland. Reclamation activities have not begun at the site.
Topsoil stockpiles were observed along the south, north and east boundaries. The active mine face was
temporarily sloped for the winter. No noxious weeds were observed and no erosion was noted during the
inspection.
The mine sign and permit boundaries were observed as required by Rule 3.1.12. The site was well organized
and maintained by Grand County Department of Road and Bridge. No problems were noted during the
inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Mr. Ken Haynes
Grand County
467 E.
