The Kremmling Airport site was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(Division) as part of the Division's monitoring inspection program. Mr. Bill Clark with Grand County
Department of Road and Bridge was present during the inspection. The site was last inspected by the Division
on September 16, 2009.
The Kremmling Airport Pit is located on the south side of the Kremmling Airport southeast of Kremmling,
Colorado. The site is permitted for 11.60 acres of disturbance. The Division estimated the current mined
acreage at 2 acres and the overall disturbance at 3 acres.
The 2012 annual report submitted by Grand County Department of Road and Bridge indicated the pit was
mined in July of 2012 and hauling activities were observed during the inspection. The highwall continues to
move to the east and was approximately 20 feet in height.
The approved post mining land use is industrial /commercial. Approximately 150 feet of the western portion of
the northern slope was regraded, topsoiled and seeded in 2012. The final northern slope is approved at 2:1,
however due to the mining method and size of the workable area the resulting slope is closer to 3:1. The
topsoil stockpile along the northern boundary of the pit adjacent to the airport fence appeared stable and
adequately vegetated. The required 25 foot offset from the airport fence and evidence of ongoing noxious
weed control (scotch and musk thistle) at the site were observed.
An entrance sign was posted and permit boundary markers were observed as required by Rule 3.1.12. The
site was well organized and maintained by Grand County Department of Road and Bridge. No problems were
noted during the inspection. Photographs taken during the inspection are attached.
Inspection Contact Address
Ken Haynes
Grand County
467 E.
