Inspiration Point site was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(Division) as part of the Division's monitoring inspection program. Mr. Bill Clark with Grand County
Department of Road and Bridge and Ms. Kelly Hodgson with BLM were present during the inspection.
The site was mined on April 13, 2012 according to the 2012 annual report submitted by the Operator. The site
appeared mostly unchanged since the last inspection on April 14, 2009. A stockpile of processed material is
located in the north end of the pit floor and mining has continued to the south. The site is approved for 19.90
acres and Grand County estimates 9.18 acres are currently disturbed.
Grand County does not anticipate mining the site to the southern boundary as indicated in the approved
mining plan. The material in the southern hillside contains lenses of clayey material which is not beneficial to
Grand County and the hillside is too steep. The southern slope has been temporarily graded at approximately
2H:1V. Grand County is working with BLM to permit another mine site in the area to replace this site.
The approved post mining land use is recreation. Grand County Road and Bridge continues to work with BLM
on the final reclamation plan. Topsoil stockpiles were observed along the north, west and south boundaries.
The stockpiles were well vegetated and appeared stable. Noxious weeds including; diffuse knapweed, oxeye
daisies, cheatgrass and common mulien were observed during the inspection. Mr. Clark stated the county
weed control manager would be informed of the problem and would monitor the site closely next year.
An entrance sign was posted and permit boundary markers were observed as required by Rule 3.1.12. The
site was well organized and maintained by Grand County Department of Road and Bridge. No problems were
noted during the inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Ken Haynes
Grand County
467 E.
