OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: M- 1984 -156
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: PSH
INSPECTION DATE: October 24, 2012
The Grand County No. 201 aka Scholl Pit was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of Reclamation, Mining
and Safety (Division) as part of the Division's monitoring inspection program. Mr. Bill Clark with Grand County
Department of Road and Bridge and Ms. Kelly Hudgson with BLM were present during the inspection.
The Scholl Pit is located approximately 6 miles east of Kremmling, Colorado on County Road 201. The
northern pit boundary roughly parallels County Road 201. The mining operation is divided into three phases.
Mining has occurred in Phases 1 and 2. No mining or other disturbance will occurred in Phase 3 due to the
presence of archeological artifacts.
The Scholl Pit permit was approved by the Division on May 29, 1985 for 9.70 acres. The Division approved a
conversion (CN -01) to a 112 permit on August 3, 1998 for a total acreage of 41.84. The site was previously
inspected by the Division on April 14, 2009. An entrance sign was posted and permit boundary markers were
observed as required by Rule 3.1.12. No problems were noted during the inspection.
Phase 1
Phase 1 was mined by Grand County in April of 2012 according to the annual report submitted by the
Operator. A stockpile of processed material was observed on the pit floor of Phase 1. Mining is expected to
continue to the south and east in a counter clockwise direction. The topsoil stockpile in the southwest corner
of the site will be used for reclamation of Phase I as mining progresses. The northwest corner of the phase
was sloped and seeded in 2012. The area was broadcast seeded and tracked in with a dozer.
Phase 2
Phase 2 is mined for clay. The clay is mixed with material from Phase 1 to add binder for use on roads. The
topsoil stockpiles along the south and north boundaries of the phase were vegetated and appeared stable.
Phase 3
Phase 3 is undisturbed and the section of Phase 3 located between Phase 1 and 2 is fenced and will not be
mined due to archeological stipulations by the BLM.
The site was well organized and maintained by Grand County Department of Road and Bridge. Mr. Clark
stated fence repair would be performed on the fence separating Phases 1 and 2 from Phase 3 in the future.
Photographs taken during the inspection are attached.
Inspection Contact Address
Mr. Ken Haynes
Grand County
467 E.
