2012 Summary Report- Noxious Weed Management on
HOLCIM (US) Inc. Quarries in Larimer County -2012
Holcim (US) Inc.
3500 Highway 120
Florence, CO 81226
Attn: Mike Toelle
Mike,
coc•i+ A of aw
Below is a summary of the 2012 spray season for HOLCIM (U.S) Inc. quarries in Larimer
County. This season proved to be a tough season to spray noxious weeds with the weather
patterns we experienced and the extreme drought. Our main target species continues to be
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula), and Canada thistle (Circium arvense), but have begun to notice
and increase in Houndstongue (Cynoglossum officinale) and Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria
dalmatica). Although significant progress has been made, and a large percentage of
infestations have been reduced, we are still experiencing new infestations popping up in areas
not seen in the past years and therefore scouting of the entire properties was mandatory to
assure proper coverage.
Our main focus, and where the greatest noxious weed problems occur, was the main
quarry, the Boettcher Limestone Quarry, and to some extent the Curtis Lake area. Based on our
past observations and applications of the Boettcher quarry, we are starting to see better control
in areas that were heavily infested with L. spurge and C.thistle on the east side of the property
from south to north, but are experiencing minimal re- growth of L.spurge and C.thistle from
adjacent properties, as well as new infestations including Houndstongue and D.toadflax.
Applications on Houndstongue and D. toadflax treatments were performed, and results varied
on the east side for D.toadflax, and the Houndstongue is still to be determined, but we
recommend continued monitoring in this area of the property to assure maximum control. The
more north on the east side of property you go, the cleaner the property looks, with minimal
patches of re- growth from existing infestations already treated, all the way up to the northern
boundary of the property near the large meadow. One area of concern on the east side that we
want to mention is the pits. Each pit with water in them on the east side of the property has
mixed results for control of L. spurge. These pits to date show only small signs of L.spurge
being found in them, but have caused issues in applications in the past due to the steepness of
the pits, and the unstable ground caused by loose rocks and debris. Treatments have been
