JD -6 Mine Environmental Protection Plan 44
10. WATER QUALITY MONITORING PLAN
A water quality monitoring plan has been developed for groundwater in the vadose zone (Section 9.6) and
the saturated zone (Section 10.1) at the JD -6 Mine. In the absence of any perennial water source, no
surface water monitoring is proposed.
10.1 Groundwater Monitoring
10.1.1 Monitoring Well Location
Cotter proposes to install a new monitoring well downgradient of the current and proposed underground
workings at the JD -6 Mine. Installation of an upgradient well is not possible, because the geologic units
are essentially dry upgradient of the underground mine and within the northern portion of the mine.
No monitoring wells currently exist at the JD -6 site. The proposed downgradient well location is shown in
Figure 11. The proposed well completion interval is shown in Table 24. The monitoring wells would be
constructed using 3 -inch or 4 -inch casing and a 40 -ft screened interval. The monitoring well will be be
permitted through DWR and will be drilled, completed, and developed in accordance with standard
environmental protocols for monitoring well construction.
Table 24. Drilling would commence after the
DOE stay on all mining activities in the lease tract is lifted, after the location and well construction are
approved by DRMS, and at least six months prior to the start of underground mining).
4148A.120927 Whetstone Associates
