JD -6 Mine Environmental Protection Plan 38 <br />lysimeter data in the area. The alluvium and landslide deposits are primarily unsaturated and are not <br />considered a source of groundwater. <br />Groundwater typically occurs at the base of the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation, perched <br />above the low- permeability Summerville Formation. Avery (1986) referred to the Morrison Formation as <br />the "M" aquifer and defined the underlying Summerville Formation as the lower confining layer for the <br />"M" aquifer. Groundwater levels were noted in 20% (79 of 404) of the exploration holes drilled on the JD- <br />6 lease. Most exploration holes toward the north side of the project were dry, while more of those in the <br />down -dip (south) direction contained some water. The water levels in exploration holes give an abstract <br />indication that the local groundwater gradient is down -dip (south- southeast) in the direction of the majoral <br />structural syncline that dominates this fault block of Monogram Mesa. <br />Upgradient of the JD -6 lease, the underground workings at the Mineral Joe Mine have been dry for <br />decades, due to the groundwater divide and lack of recharge area on the escarpment of Monogram Mesa. <br />9.4 Inventory of Wells and Water Use <br />9.4.1 Well Inventory <br />Wells drilled in Colorado are registered with the Colorado Division of Water Resources (DWR), and are a <br />matter of public record. DWR records list 14 unique wells within two miles of the JD -6 Mine permit <br />boundary, most of which are monitoring wells associated with the proposed Pinon Ridge Mill west of the <br />JD -6 mine site. One of these 14 wells is listed as abandoned (Table 6). Of the remaining 13 wells, ten are <br />located more than one mile from the JD -6 Mine permit boundary. The nearest well is located 0.585 miles <br />(3,089 ft) from the JD -6 Mine permit boundary. All of the listed wells have perforated casing and have a <br />well depth of 106 feet or more. The depth to water of each well ranges from 21 -379 ft. The yield of the <br />wells ranges from 8 -889 gpm. <br />9.4.2 Project Water Requirements <br />Project water requirements are estimated at 60,000 gallons per year during the development phase and <br />mining phase of the project. The source of water for the mining activities will be the Naturita Municipal <br />System. No adjudicated water rights will be injured by the project. <br />The water provided from offsite would be used for equipment washing, toilets, and shop purposes. <br />Drinking water for site workers is provided from offsite bottled water sources <br />4148A.120927 Whetstone Associates • <br />
