6.1.3.2 Cross Contamination <br />Cross contamination of the waste rock and ore underground is minimal due to the nature <br />of the "split shooting" method used in mining. During the "split shooting" effort, the <br />drill round is completely drilled, the drill holes are probed to determine where the break <br />between ore and waste material is, and then the waste material is blasted and removed. <br />Once the waste material is removed, the ore material is blasted and removed to the ore <br />stockpile area. <br />6.1.3.3 Groundwater <br />The waste rock pile sits on approximately 150 feet of Brushy Basin shales that separate <br />the waste rock from groundwater located in the upper sandstone unit of the Salt Wash <br />formation. Lysimeter data discussed in detail in Section 8 indicate that no infiltration of <br />precipitation that could leach constituents of concern is occurring at the site. The lack of <br />downward movement of water and the low permeability of the rock indicate that the <br />waste rock pile possess no threat to the groundwater underlying the site. <br />6.1.3.4 Re- vegetation <br />The waste rock pile and ore pad will be covered with fines from the mine waste pile and <br />reseeded after mining is complete. Evaporation from the surface and shallow subsurface <br />limits infiltration through the waste -rock pile. After re- vegetation is complete, <br />evaporation, coupled with plant growth, will limit infiltration and fugitive dust. <br />(7) Facilities Evaluation <br />7.1 Containment Measures <br />Berms and stormwater runoff basins have been constructed at the JD -9 mine site. These <br />structures have proven effective in diverting stormwater away from the ore and waste <br />rock stockpiles as well as preventing erosion. <br />In addition, a Drainage Design Plan has been developed for this site. The goal of this <br />Drainage Design Plan is to control runoff from leaving the site during peak events. To <br />this end, a few improvements have been recommended and Cotter will be implementing <br />them following the approval of this amendment. <br />See Appendix III — Drainage Design Plan for a full discussion of containment and <br />diversion measures including maps. <br />7.2 Environmental Protection Evaluation <br />7.2.1 Radiometric Survey <br />Cotter will conduct a site radiation survey prior to mining in order to establish a baseline <br />of current conditions.
