Exhibit I
Soils Information
JD -9 Mine Permit Amendment
M- 1977 -306
The major soil types found in the region of the JD -9 Mine as defined by the United States
Department of Agriculture, Web Soil Survey (WSS) are:
1. 14 -Barx fine sandy loam, 1 to 3 percent slopes
2. 15 -Barx fine sandy loam, 3 to 6 percent slopes
3. 17 -Barx- Progresso complex
4. 23- Bodot, dry -Ustic Torriorthents complex
5. 60- Monogram loam 1 to 8 percent
6. 75- Pinon - Bowdish -Rock loams, cool, 1 to 12 percent slopes
7. 76- Pinon - Bowdish -Rock outcrop complex
8. 87 -Rock outcrop
9. 88 -Rock outcrop- Orthents complex
A complete description of each soil type, as well as general locations of each type within the
JD -9 permit area, are included in the Web Soil Survey report and map below.
The main surface disturbance in the upper mining area will be located in the Monogram loam
(Soil map unit 60). In the lower mining area, the main disturbance is to the Rock outcrop -
Orthents complex (Soil map unit 88). The dominant parent material for these soils is sandstone
with some shale and alluvium.
The Monogram loam component is found on mesas and structural benches. These soils are deep
with a high water capacity making them good growth medium onsite.
The Rock outcrop - Orthents complex is relatively unproductive and thin with bedrock outcrops.
These soils can be described as warm, shallow, well- drained, sloping soils and rock outcrop on
breaks and canyons.
The dominant ground cover associated with mapping unit 60 and 88 is pinion juniper. At higher
elevations, oakbrush, serviceberry, and grasses are more prevalent, while willows and
cottonwoods may be found along the narrow valleys.
