clay liner cover material, which lies underneath the 50 ft x 50 ft ore pad area
shown on Map C -2B, will be excavated over a 3,600 square foot area (60 ft x 60
ft). This material will be disposed of as part of the backfill material to be placed
when closing the portal. Interaction with water is not a concern since the majority
of water in the mine is from the ore zone. The calculated volume of pad material
is 267 cubic yards.
J. Treatment Ponds and Sludge
Re- vegetation
The sludge collected in the treated water ponds would be removed from the ponds
according to Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive
Materials (TENORM) procedures, and shipped to a licensed facility for disposal.
Once the sludge is removed, the liner will be put in the venthole shaft prior to
sealing it. The ponds will then be restored to approximate the original topography
(relatively flat). The area will then be seeded.
The sludge volume after the 6 -year mine life is estimated to be approximately 160
cubic yards.
The following seed mixture is specified by DOE to be used on DOE leases in this area.
This seed mix was developed in consultation with the BLM, and is recommended for use
on all affected acreage in this permit. Seed selection criteria were based on climate and
elevation ranges within these areas. Recognizing that surface and soil conditions,
nutrients, and available moisture can vary within these areas, successful establishment of
six or more of the twelve species is considered adequate. If the total number of species
seeded is less than that specified below, the seeding rates for the individual species will
be adjusted accordingly. All seed tags will be submitted to DOE for verification prior to
the seeding application.
