The portal is located on the eastern side of a small ephemeral drainage where runoff from the
Burro Canyon capped highlands, located north of the mine, drains to the south into the Long
Park area. In this drainage, approximately 2000 feet north of the portal, is a drainage divide
where runoff from the highlands will flow north into a separate drainage basin. Surface runoff
from the LP -21 mine area flows into small arroyos that drain Long Park to the west before
eventually turning north and discharging into the San Miguel River approximately 5 miles
upstream from the former town of Uravan, Colorado.
4.0 Site Description
4.1 Operations structures
LP -21 is a designated mining operation. Uranium and vanadium minerals will be mined
underground producing ore and waste rock. The ore will temporarily be stored on the surface
while awaiting transport to a processing facility. The waste rock may be stored partially on the
surface and partially in the mine. At the present time, the site has been reclaimed and includes
vegetation that has become well established since the cessation of previous mining. There are no
operational structures presently located at the site.
Once mining resumes, the waste rock stockpile will be the major feature of the site, extending to
the east from the existing pile and against the hillside located to the north. During this time, it
is anticipated that additional storage facilities for compressors, generators, maintenance
equipment, and supplies, plus a 500- gallon diesel fuel tank with secondary containment, will be
installed at the site to support mining activities. These facilities will be located immediately
southeast of the waste rock pile.
As mining continues, the waste rock pile will expand in a northerly direction with additional
waste rock piled on top of the existing pile toward the adjacent hillside to the north. The ore pad
will be located apart from the waste rock, southwest of the portal. The area below the waste rock
stockpile to the south and across the existing access roadway will contain the runoff retention
pond for the site.
The existing mine entrance roads that connect to the nearby county road will be used as haul
roads to periodically transport ore from the mine.
Vegetation
4.2 Surrounding Area Characteristics
There are three distinct vegetative units immediately surrounding the affected area of LP -21.
They are: an open sagebrush park, a strip of sparsely populated pinion juniper and rock outcrop
combinations, and a highland area dominated by rock and scattered ponderosa pine and oak
brush. Associated secondary species include:
Indian ricegrass Fourwing saltbrush Pricklypear
ESWMP -2
