Topsoil
I. Ore Stockpile
All ore will be removed prior to reclamation. As the waste rock pile is directly
adjacent to the ore stockpile area, some waste rock may be distributed over this
area to help obtain a more gradual slope of the waste rock pile. The compacted
soil on this pad will be scarified, covered with the finer waste material as well as
soil, if available, and then pocked and seeded.
All topsoil originally stripped from the waste rock stockpile area has been spread over the
waste rock area. It is not a viable option to strip this soil from on top of the stockpile as it
would be mixed with waste material and would not yield enough soil to warrant the effort.
Therefore, the finer waste material will be spread over the expanded waste rock pile,
which will then be pocked to retain moisture and seeded with the approved DOE seed
mixture. If the waste area is expanded or a new one started at the base of the northern
hillside, then soil will be salvaged from this area and distributed over the waste rock
during final reclamation.
Re- vegetation
Although much of surrounding vegetation consists of pinon pine and juniper, the affected
land will be planted largely in grass with some desert shrubs as recommended by the
surface owner, the DOE. This type of re- vegetation will be of greater benefit to the
rangeland and wildlife habitat uses, and will provide better and more immediate soil
stabilization.
The following seed mixture is specified by the DOE to be used on DOE leases in this
area. This seed mix was developed in consultation with the BLM, and is recommended
for use on all affected acreage in this permit. Seed selection criteria were based on
climate and elevation ranges within these areas. Recognizing that surface and soil
conditions, nutrients, and available moisture can vary within these areas, successful
establishment of six or more of the twelve species is considered adequate. If the total
number of species seeded is less than that specified below, the seeding rates for the
individual species must be adjusted accordingly. All seed tags must be submitted to DOE
for verification prior to the seeding application.
