Exhibit I <br />Soils Description <br />JD -7 Mine Permit Amendment <br />M- 1979 -094HR <br />I.1 Introduction <br />The JD -7 site is located at the southern edge of the Paradox Valley floor, and <br />encompasses two distinct Land forms. These are the relatively level valley bottom <br />alluvium and the north facing colluvial slopes of Monogram Mesa. The soil mapping <br />unit boundaries and the boundaries of the two extant plant communities (see Exhibit U - <br />EPP) are essentially coincident. Most of the information contained in the Soils and <br />Vegetation exhibits of this application is taken from survey notes provided by the <br />Norwood Field Office of the Soil Conservation Service. These notes include survey sites <br />in or very close to the actual JD -7 site. These data are supplemented by notes taken <br />during a site survey conducted by a soil scientist from Impact, Ltd. <br />A more complete review of the soils on the mine site is included in Exhibit U — EPP. <br />I.2 Soil Description <br />I.2.1 Bouldery Clay Loam <br />The mapping unit covering the mesa toe slopes and benches, and corresponding to the <br />pinion juniper woodland site, is a complex which is 85% predominated by an unnamed <br />boulder clay loam (see Exhibit U — EPP, Map 5). This soil is classified as an Ustic <br />Torriorthent, fine loamy, mixed (calcareous), mesic. This is a shallow, well drained, <br />moderately permeable soil occurring on slopes typically 30% or greater. The surface is <br />very bouldery and stony. A typical pedon is described by: <br />A 0 -4 inches; dark brown (7.5 YR 4/2) moist, bouldery Clay loam; fine granular <br />structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky; calcareous (pH 8.2); 30% rock <br />fragments; clear wavy boundary. <br />IIC -- 4 to 31 inches; light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) moist; clay loam; massive <br />structure; hard, friable, sticky, plastic; calcareous (pH 8.4); 30% rock fragments; <br />clear wavy boundary. <br />IIC -- 31 inches; grey shale (sometimes rust- colored). <br />Root penetration beyond the IIC horizon is essentially nil. Erosion potential is moderate, <br />due mainly to steep slopes. There is no water table in any horizon or within the root <br />zone. Inclusions in this mapping unit have been identified as Hagerman, Lazear, <br />Travesilla, and Kim series. These inclusions comprise less than 15% of the area of the <br />complex and occur usually under small sagebrush parks (less than 1/2 acre) which are <br />somewhat less steep, bouldery and shallower than the rest of the area. Descriptions of <br />these soils have been published and are available elsewhere. Since they comprise such a <br />small portion of the area, they will not be described in detail here. <br />I -1 <br />
