Dept. of Natural Resources
Dear Jim,
We hereby request permission to store coal on a periodic, temporary, emergency
basis on the No. 2 Mine bin pad.
Each winter it seems we inevitably find ourselves in the position whereby the
mine is producing coal at a maximum rate and the trucks, either because of road
conditions or mechanical problems associated with the winter, cannot keep up.
We need to have a certain amount of surge capacity at the bin pad to allow us
to maintain maximum mining capacity.
Enclosed is copy of the No. 2 Mine map showing the bin pad. We propose to
strengthen the existing fence with back braces and weld steel plates across the
front to make a solid strong barrier around the pad. See sketch. This streng-
thened fence plus our two new ponds would ensure protection of the hydrologic
balance. We have to get through the winter of 1984-85 and 1985-86, then the
tunnel complex should be completed and many of our current surface problems
will be resolved.
This surge capacity would normally range from 1500 to 3000 tons (1500 tons is
one shift and 3000 tons is one day) with an absolute maximum of 5800 tons. See
Tom Johansen's calculations for maximum room on pad. This would allow approxi-
mately 12 to 2 days storage in case of an emergency situation, such as road
closure due to heavy snow, etc.
Please call me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
\7
Environmental Coordinator
DWBowman:ms
Enclosures
