-43-
The analyses indicate that the most critical loading condition
for the development rock pile is the infinite slope analogy with a
shallow surface failure occurring. The face of the rock pile and the
foundation materials are stable under all the analyzed loading
conditions, including earthquake coefficients of 0.05 and 0.1 which
represent dynamic loadings which are larger than can reasonably be
expected at this site.
Because of the embankment size and the strength of the foundation
materials, no formal stability analyses were performed on the berms
which will be constructed around the acid storage tanks. Literature
published by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and our experience with
similar small dikes indicates that providing they are constructed
according to the criteria discussed in Berms and Liners, they will
have factors of safety exceeding those suggested for earth dam
construction.
SITE DRAINAGE
Surface drainage ditches are recommended upslope of the vat
leaching facilities and the waste rods storage pile in order tc
divert surface runoffs around the plant area.
Considering the meteorology of the region and the size of the
i.nages, the probable maximum precipitation events will most likely
associated with thunderstorm activity. Probable maximum thunder -
_ormS for a 1 hour rainfall west of the 105th Meridian are presented
,i the Bureau of Reclamation (1974). According to this publication,
probable maximum thunderstorm in the vicinity of the JD-5 lease
