-40-
FOUNDATIONS
Considering the subsurface conditions encountered in our test
pits, our experience with'similar soils and the nature of the proposed
construction, we recommend that the concrete vats and the solvent
extraction building be founded on spread footings bearing on the
natural soils and /or properly compacted structural fill material. The
following design and construction details should be observed for
spread footing foundations:
(1) Footings placed on the upper natural soils and /or properly
compacted structural fill material should be designed for a
maximum soil pressure of 3,000 psf and a minimum dead load
pressure of 1,000 psf. Under this pressure, we estimate that
total movement of the footings and the leaching vats will be on
the order of 1 inch with differential movements across the
proposed structures of less than 3/4 inch.
(2) Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom
to span an unsupported length of at least 10 feet.
(3) Soft or loose soil pockets may be encountered within the loaded
depths of the footings and beneath the vat structures. These
materials should be removed when encountered and replaced with
properly compacted fill material or the footings should be
extended to adequate bearing material.
4) Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover
above their bearing elevation for frost protection. Frost depth
for footings and underground utility lines is normally 30 inches
in this area.
