PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF STUDY <br />This report presents the results of a geologic, hydrologic, <br />seismologic and geotechnical investigation for the proposed at <br />leaching facilities and subsurface disposal site at the JD-5 Uranium <br />Mine near Naturita in Montrose County, Colorado. The project area is <br />shown on the location map, Fig. 1. The study has been conducted in <br />accordance with our proposal to Gates & Fox Company, Inc. dated <br />December 28, 1979. Regional demography and land use information were <br />presented in our letter of January 21, 1980. <br />The purposes of the investigation, as stated in our original <br />proposal, are: <br />(1) Collect demographic, geologic, hydrologic and seismologic <br />information for input into the environmental report. <br />(2) Conduct a subsurface investigation at the proposed plant site to <br />develop information on soil, rock and ground water conditions. <br />(3) Present recommendations on the feasibility of constructing the <br />proposed facility considering economy of construction, <br />environmental impact and ease of implementation. <br />(4) Present recommendations on the geotechnical aspects of proposed <br />reclamation schemes. <br />The study consisted of the following major tasks: <br />(1) A review of pertinent existing data in the areas under <br />consideration. <br />(2) A field investigation program consisting of: excavation of ten <br />exploratory test pits in order to recover undisturbed samples and <br />disturbed bag samples of the foundation materials; in -situ <br />
