- 13 -
Stratigraphic evidence in the northwestern end of the Paradox Valley
indicates that the valley floor topography was near its present -day
form by the early Pleistocene.
SITE GEOLOGY
The proposed uranium leaching facility and deep subsurface waste
rock disposal site will be located on the JD-5 uranium lease. The
lease covers about 81 acres on the southwestern side of the Paradox
Valley. The general geologic features in the vicinity are shown on
Figs. 4 and 5. The leaching plant will be located on the surface near
the main mine shaft as shown on Fig. 2. Waste rods from the leaching
process will be stowed in worked out areas of the mine. A map of the
current mine workings as of January 1980 is shown on Fig 6. The mine
is a series of drifts and stopes in the Salt Wash member .)f the
Morrison. Formation. The current mine workings are from 250 to :330
feet below the ground surface. Two levels have been mined, and mining
is presently progressing on the upper level toward the southeastern
portion of the lease. Gates & Fox have drilled and are currently
drilling numerous exploratory holes ahead of the mining operation in
order to evaluate ore reserves. The locations of the holes with
sufficient data available for our investigation are shown on Fig.6.
The southwestern Paradox Valley side in the vicinity of the lease
is cut by a complex system of northwest trending high angle, normal
faults which have resulted from the crestal collapse of the Paradox
Valley salt anticline in Tertiary time. Faults which have been mapped
in the mine are shown on Fig. 6, and the general pattern of faulting
