7 -
Additional Concerns and Sucaestions
- Several approaches to revege_ation cf the various challenging sites at-
Coal Basin were discussed. It was noted that several native species had
volunteered on steep, high eievatior, aisturbances and were prevalent on
natural shale slopes. The cominant scecies were a robust buncharass
wnich has not been positively icentified, ana a scecies of Senecio,
scecies unknown. Collection anc use of seed f-cm tnese species might
significantiv benefit revege_aticn efforts . Possible use or testing of
cnemical soil stabilizers , Biosci amendment anc various mulch treatments ,
in addition to the straw mulch with plastic netting treatment utilized on
the test plots was discussed. The possibility of spreading lodgepole
pine slash from Forest Service timer cuts on certain disturbed sites was
mentioned.
- It was noted that the final reclamation plan for the portal sites was
somewhat general . Post mine contour macs with sufficient cross sections
t0 depict existing and final reclamation `opograony fJr eaCh Of the
various portal and bin pad sites will be necessary.
- Given the fact that much of the Coal Basin site was disturbed pre-law, no
topsoil was salvaged. The relative advantages and disadvantages of
borrowing topsoil from undisturbed sites for use on selected reclamation
areas was discussed, without resolution.
- Haul and access roads , as well as traveled areas of the portal benches
may need t0 be gravel surfaced 4Z.-0 minimize ri1is --and ruts .
- The extreme variability or weather conditions from site to site within
- Coal Basin was observed and discussed. Installation of weather stations
at each of the portal sites and various other locations is recommended.
- An estimate of the sediment storage capacity vs deposition rate for the
Mine 1 and Arctic Circle BAT ponds , as well as other proposed haul /access
road structures will be needed to assess maintenance needs , effectivness ,
and optimum size .
- Cattle have heavily grazed road cuts and fills in some areas , and were
observed on newly reveyetated portions of the old coal refuse pile . Both
coal refuse piles should be fenced to keep cattle out. The problem of
cattle congregation along the roaas is less easily addressed.
OTM/yjb
Enclosure(s)
8339F
