TECHNICAL REVISION 4
Aug. 11 , 1986 - Modification of water monitoring program.
Specifies parameters; also, samples in peak flow and law
flow.
As required, Mid-Continent has established monitoring sites and
maintains records to determine compliance with water quality
requirements; such monitoring is done semi-annually, and according
to the requirements of the Division. As required, sampling was
done in June and July of 1989 , with results recorded, sufficient
to determine the effects in water systems in the permit area and
ad iacent area.
In sampling GW-1, Mid-Continent was following the usual, approved
method for sample collection. Intervening factors beyond the
reasonable control of Mid-Continent made it impossible to get
sufficent water to sample for all parameters. However, this did
not result from a failure by Mid-Continent to monitor, as required,
nor did it result from a failure by Mid-Continent to follow normal
monitoring procedures acceptable to the division.
* Please note attachments re. pertinent sampling
records.
***
RE: NOV C-90-002
The pad area is adjacent the roadway leading to the mine portal and
lamphouse area. The pad area is protected by a berm around its
outside perimeter, and drainage from the pad itself flows downhill ,
in a southerly direction, to pond series 010.
The hillside to the north of the pad, below the berm around the
perimeter, is intersected by a ditch, which collects runoff from
the hillside and routes it to the thickener pond which is west of
the preparation plant.
In July, a major storm event carried substantial amounts of
sediment and debris into the drainage system of the permit area.
Ditches and culverts had to be cleaned in and around the permit
area. At the pad itself, the berming around the pad was repaired.
The ditch along the north slope had apparently filled with sediment
and debris from the July thunderstorm. However, this was not
detected at the time of the clean-up and repairs to the berm.
Because this ditch was clogged, water from the hillside broke
through the embankment of the ditch, causing the erosion noted on
4
