the curvature in the pipe of the well was so severe that it could
not be rounded by the 3' long tube of the sampling device. The
curvature of the pipe is at such a depth as to prevent any kind of
access for repairs.
In attempting to collect a sample of water from this well , Mid-
Continent personnel lowered a bottle, attached with rope, down to
the bottom. Some water was collected in this fashion. However,
the quantity was limited because a small bottle had to be used, and
it was not an efficient sampling device. Accordingly, the bottle
was lowered a second time to collect more water. The bottle became
wedged at the point of the curvature in the pipe. Efforts to
dislodge the bottle resulted in breakage of the rope. The bottle
blocked the well, and prevented collection of more water.
The sample collected in July was analyzed, as required, for flow,
temperature, conductivity and pH. Sufficient water could not be
obtained, however, to send to the lab for analyis of other
parameters.
Repeated efforts were made, both during the July sampling period,
and over the course of the summer, to dislodge the bottle. Among
the methods attempted was to drop a heavy bolt down the well with
the objective of weighting the bottle and pushing it to the bottom
of the well. This did not work, nor did other methods.
Finally, in November, a method was devised which proved successful ,
and a sample was obtained. A 65' length of 1 1/2" diameter PVC
pipe was assembled and forced down the well. This pipe dislodged
the bottle, and was used to collect the sample. The pipe had been
capped at the bottom and holes had been drilled approximately 3 '
from the bottom. The holes allowed water to run in, which
collected in the lowermost 3 ' portion of the pipe. The pipe was
then pulled out of the well, and a sample collected.
Mid-Continent anticipates that this method will have to be employed
to collect samples from GW-1 in the future, as the curvature of the
pipe in the well cannot be corrected.
Sample results obtained from other wells in the area of the Sutey
pile during June, and the sample results obtained from GW-1 during
the fall, indicated good water and no problems.
Mid-Continent does not believe that the problems experienced with
GW-1 warrant a violation.
As required, Mid-Continent did semi-annual monitoring of surface
and groundwater sites, and kept records of the results.
Mid-Continent did sample GW-1 during the first sampling period, and
tested for those parameters which could be tested, given the sample
size obtainable.
2
