Mid-Continent Resources
Response -W.O.C.D.
Water from the active working area flows down the face to the headgate area and is
pumped through a series of tanks in order to de-water the mine. Previously, this turbid
water was routed from the tanks directly to the tunnel discharge pipe which leads to the
settling ponds for treatment prior to discharge from outfall 016.
As problems became apparent, in late January, with treatment of suspended solids at
outfall 016, Mid-Continent began an examination of surface and in-mine treatment of
turbid mine water.
As a result, Mid-Continent determined some in-mine treatment would be practicable on
a short-term basis and has begun installation of a system which will re-route turbid
water from the working face so that, after leaving the holding tanks, it will be pumped to
an inactive area of the mine, the #5 South Entry, then allowed to drain down to the #6
South Entry, which is presently used as a sump. As the water flows downgrade from #5
South to #6 South Entry, Mid-Continent anticipates that the sediments will be settled
out. The clear water can then be routed to the tunnel discharge pipe from #6 South, or
re-used in the mine.
Long-Term Planning.
M id-Continent is of the opinion that long-term modifications to the system at Discharge
Point 016 are best made on the surface, given the variables and unpredictable factors
underground, and will require further study and analysis.
A cyclone de-sander is being set up and will be operated on an experimental basis to
determine whether it offers a feasible, effective technology for treatment of turbid mine
water.
Mid-Continent will apply to the Mined Land Reclamation Division for permission to install
a series of pipes at the ponds of 016 which will allow isolation of any one of the three
ponds, and thus prevent discharge from the pond, during cleaning.
In addition, Mid-Continent will improve the access route to the pond so as to allow
quicker response for cleaning.
RESPONSE#3
W.Q.C.D.
3. Within 10 days of issuance of this order, submit to the Division your records for
temperature, snowfall, snowpack and precipitation for the period beginning with
issuance of this order and back to December 1, 1988,
Records are included, see attachments.
4
