Chapter IV
These oermiis, as approved, require Mid-Continent to monitor point discharge
points for flow, total dissolved solids, iron, manganese, pH and of and greases and
to send in quarterly reports.
b. Ground Water.
Ground water in the permit area is being monitored using around water
ooservation wells in orger to detect adverse water quality and changes in the
ground water flow system (Exhibit IV-C-1). The alluvial well system is primarily
used to detect changes in the ground water flow system (Exhibit IV-C-1). The
alluvial well system is primarily used to detect cnanoes resulting from surface
facility impacts. The wells are also being monitoredtor static water levels to
determine if the base flow ground water component is, or will be depleted by the
mining operations. The fifteen wells in the mine plan area (See be,
VI-C-1), are
measured and sampled bi-annually. in addition, ground water observation wells
will oe installed in refuse and tunnel spoil disposal areas to detect if infiltrating
water is leeching undesirable minerals from the sooi;. The wells w;;; also check
pore water pressure which, if it does exist, will Drovide an early warning that the fill
could be structurally unsound. See Appendix III-E-2, Figure III-E-2, and Table
III-E-1 for around water quality data.
Field Tests La=
Flow Bicarbonate
Temperature Sulfate
PH Sodium
Conductivity Calcium
Chloride
Magnesium
Sodium Absorption Ratio
Iron
Total Dissolved Solids
C. Surface Water.
Mid-Continent has been collecting su„ace water samples from up to ten
monitoring Doints on a monthly oasis since 1977, and from three points since
1974. Now that water quality ❑ata base has been estabi:shed, ire comoanv will
continue to collect samples from six Key monitoring ooints: Nos. 3, 2G, and
Sutey 1, 2 and 3) as indicated on Exhibit IV-C-1. Tne tnree Sutev points were
added in 1984 Tor the new coal refuse Dile area. in aodition to m=asunng now,
tests are done to determine the amounts oT the foliowing
sample: substances it each v✓titer
LLL Field Test
IO
Flow Bicarbonate
Tern,Derature Sulfate
D^i - Sodium
Conductivity Calcium
Chloride —
Magnesium
Sodium Absorption Ratio
Iron (i otal Recoverbie for N=D=S)
Total Dissolved Solids
Total Suspended Solids
23
