The Colorado Fuel & Iron Co. operated a mine in the Coal Basin
from 1900-1909. The mine, and the town of Coalbasin, were
accessed by rail.
The road which connects the central complex of the current
mine facility to highway 133 was constructed on the original
railroad grade. Part of the access road to the coal refuse
disposal facility also runs along part of the original rail
route. The Coal Basin (#5) Mine, developed in 1973 , utilized
the rock tunnel driven at the turn of the century for the
C.F.&I. operation.
B. Existing Mine Facilities
It is C.S. Coal Is current intent to use the existing mine
facilities for mine operations without significant additional
surface disturbance. C.S. Coal plans to complete the approved
water treatment facility at the time mining operations are
resumed.
Construction of the present mine facility began in 1953 . A
series of five entries were driven in development of the mine
complex, as follows:
NINE ENTRY BEGINNING OF PRODUCTION
Dutch Creek #1 1956
L.S. Wood #3 1966
Bear Creek #4 1969
L.S. Wood #2 1973
Coal Basin #5 1973
These operations were developed as drift mines, following
coal downdip, from the outcrop. Mine portals and benches
were constructed at the coal seam outcrop. As part of
the development of each entry, haul roads were built
between the mine portals and the central mine complex
area, which has been used throughout the life of the mine
for various activities, including coal storage,
processing, transfer of washed coal to trucks for
transport to the rail facility, and disposal of natural
refuse material generated in processing.
Driveage of a 15,0001 twin bore tunnel, which extends
from the surface to the underground workings, was
completed, and the tunnel became operational in 1987.
The tunnel is the primary transportation artery for the
Crystal Springs Coal, Inc. 10 Coal Basin Mine
