f=
r
Photo 5. Portals of the twin rock tunnels which provided access to the Dutch
Creek Nos. 1 & 2 from 1988 on. Left tunnel was used for men and material
haulage; the right tunnel contained the raw coal conveyor belt and mine
utilities. Left portal has a concrete bulkhead about 150' inby the portal;
the right hand tunnel is bulkheaded about 100' inby. No accessways have been
left in either bulkhead, but each has a 6" dia. steel pipe drain valve at the
base of the bulkhead. The left hand bulkhead is also penetrated by a 12" dia.
PVC pipe drain line to provide for continuous drainage of the flooded
workings.
1
Photo 6. Closeup of the 12" dia. PVC pipe drain line at the entrance to the
right-hand tunnel. Water collecting in the No. 1 & 2 Mines is collected at
the M-bed intercept with the tunnel (13000' to the west) and conveyed via the
12" pipe to surface. Providing for this continuous drainage will hopefully
prevent any static head from building up on the upper bulkheads. The mine
water drains at a steady rate of about 300 GPM and can be discharged into the
Dutch Creek drainage without treatment.
