September 18,2012 C-1982-057/Seneca II-W Mine MLT
Pit Ramp Slide
• This slide was reactivated with the spring runoff of 2011 (Photo 13). Trench drains had been
previously dug across and along the surface of the slide, and were lined with TRM at the time
of this inspection (Photo 14). Jay James and Brian Len, P.E. and I hiked across the slide
surface. We observed that although the contributing drainage area is small, some
concentration of flow is occurring from the reclaimed slope immediately uphill. Several rills
were present above the slide mass, where the entire thickness of the replaced growth medium
(perhaps 6 inches) had been eroded, exposing undisturbed shale beneath. A number of rills
were also established in the growth medium on the slide itself, and in situ shale was exposed
partway down the slope. Mr. Len, on behalf of SCC, will be evaluating what additional
stabilization measures may be appropriate for this slide. One desirable improvement we
discussed in the field was the diversion of all upslope runoff into an extension of the TRM-
lined ditch.
Oil Well Access Road Slide
• Repairs made to this small slide area appear to have included regrading of the slope and
placing a number of boulders near the center toe of the slide as a buttress (Photo 15). The
slope appeared to be stable and this site will continue to be monitored.
Mine Entrance Haul Road Slide
• Mr. Karo pointed out a slide area below the Mine Entrance Haul Road, on the way to Pond
006, which SCC has repaired. The slope was graded, a series of wattles had been installed,
and the channel at the bottom of the slope was armored with riprap (Photo 16).
ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS/COMPLIANCE
No enforcement actions were issued as a result of this inspection, and none are pending.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 3
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1 Page 4 of 12
