OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: M -1992 -113
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: TCW
INSPECTION DATE: September 19, 2012
This was a normal monitoring inspection conducted by TC Wait of DRMS. Mr. Curtis Sniff of Bent County
represented the operator during the site visit. The site is located about 1 mile south and 2 miles east of Hasty.
Post -mine land use for this site is rangeland.
This pit was taken on by Bent County from a previous operator. The previous operator did not do any
reclamation work prior to transfer. The site is being re- worked to some extent, and reclamation will include
areas previously worked by the first operator. At the time of the site inspection, roughly 40 acres has been
disturbed by mining activity. The active mining area is in the southwest portion of the permit area, although
the northeast area is being prepared to be re- worked in the near future. Mr. Sniff estimated that around
20,000 tons of material has been removed in the last 4 years.
The site includes an access road from the County Road. The mine was accessed by vehicle and was dry at the
time of the inspection. The permit sign was posted, and the permit boundaries have been marked with tires.
There are stockpiled materials in the southwest and central areas of the mine. The southern end of the mine
pit includes a highwall approximately 20 feet high and 1,000 feet in length. Some of the current highwall areas
include previously worked or overburden material from the previous operator. This southern side will likely
be graded and reclaimed soon. Topsoil stockpiles are present and vegetated.
The eastern area of the pit contains some tamarisk. Mr. Sniff indicated that there is a weed control plan in
place that includes spraying and pulling tamarisk. Several dead stumps were observed in the vicinity, and Mr.
Sniff stated that they would likely be spraying the tamarisk on the site in the next few weeks.
As of yet no portion of the mine has been reclaimed for release. No problems were observed.
