S. Forest Service, Glenwood Springs .
The D.O.W. shares the concerns expressed by the U.S. Forest Service
in their recent report on Coal Basin. More specifically, those
concerns are related to the sedimentation and erosion problems and
a needed plan of action regarding revegetation and reclamation of those
areas . We agree that much of this should be implemented this spring and
summer.
Another concern relates to the macro-invertebrate study being conducted
cooperatively by the U.S. Forest Service , D.O.W. , and Mid-Continent .
Over the 2-3 year of testing, if the results are consistent , a plan
of action needs to be implemented. Preliminary results ( 1989 ) indicate
high sedimentation, high sulfates , and an unidentified toxin in the
system. If this continues , the sources of these problems , especially
the toxicity, needs to be identified and corrected. The Department
of Health, Water Quality Control Division, results on their toxicity
testing could play an important role. However, I feel we also need to
test the water in Coal Creek to try and compare results . If you wish
a copy of the 1989 results , please contact the U. S. Forest Service.
1990 results should be available this spring.
Relating to the above issue of toxicity, core sampling, of the refuse
piles may be needed to determine if any toxins are leaching out of
these piles into the creek system. Samples of adequate depth and
statistically valid are recommended.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Hamlet J.
