Drainage ditches have been constructed to
improve haul road drainage. Ditches are placed at the toe of all
cut slopes and ditch relief drains were spaced as approved by the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board . Road surfaces are sloped
to the inside cut where runoff is conveyed via ditches to the
downslope culvert .
Culverts were designed to convey the runoff
from a 10 year 24 hour event where necessary and constructed
to avoid plugging •or collapse . The south fork of Dutch Creek
culvert was designed to convey the 100 year 24 hour peak flow
storm event .
The existing roads are surfaced with durable
non toxic or acid producing rock and crushed gravel in quantities
sufficient for the anticipated volume of traffic .
Mid-Continent Resources haul roads maintenance
includes periodically grading the road surface, filling potholes ,
and reapplying gravel where necessary. During the winter, snow
removal equipment such as graders , dozers and plows maintain
access to the mine complex . During the summer months water
trucks apply water and dust fixative to control fugitive dust .
Mid-Continent has implemented a road safety
program for the haul roads that traverse the Basin between 8 , 000
and 10, 000 feet elevations . Since the roads are constructed on
steep grades they are gravel surfaced in order to allow snow
 y
