The lack of a skilled labor pool in the
area, together with the sophistication of both the installed and
mobile underground equipment make it mandatory that Mid-Continent
expend a great deal of time and effort on maintenance training
programs for their mining personnel . This is accomplished through
classes conducted by Colorado Mountain College, classes conducted
directly by Mid-Continent personnel and by closely supervised on-
the-job training .
Much of the underground maintenance work
at the Coal Basin mines is performed on one of the three daily
eight hour work shifts in each mine. This assures a continuous
high rate of coal production on the other two shifts .
C . Anticipated annual and total production
The anticipated annual production of the Coal
Basin mines is between 1, 000, 000 and 2, 500, 000 tons per year, or
from 5, 000, 000 to 11, 500, 000 tons for the five year permit period .
This is based upon the anticipated market for this particular
grade of coking coal during this period . The annual and total
production capacity for all five mines during this five year
permit term is theoretically considerably greater than that
required to meet anticipated sales . Production capacities of
the entire Coal Basin Mine complex that could be accomplished
to satisfy an unlimited market are 1, 500,000 tons per year for
the remainder of this permit period (1986-88) and 2, 500,000 tons
