Wells GP -3 and GP-4 are less than 1000 feet downgradient from A pit. Both are flowing <br />wells completed in the HI and KLM aquifers, respectively. Water levels in these two wells had <br />shown similar responses in water levels due to changes in precipitation but the 2005 and 2006 water <br />level changes were different (see Figures A -11 and A -12). Water levels in well GP -3 have <br />recovered to above pre-mine levels in this area and show that any depletion of water from <br />upgradient mining has been replaced by recharge to the HI aquifer. The overall gradual declines in <br />water levels in well GP -3 in the years just prior to 2005 are probably a function of below normal <br />precipitation during this period. The water level in well GP-4 has also recovered to pre -mine levels <br />but observed variable levels in 2005 and 2006. <br />Well GMP -1 (Figure A -11) is completed in the 111 aquifer to monitor ground -water <br />conditions downgradient of the ash disposal site immediately south in A pit. Water levels became <br />steady in 2001 and stayed fairly steady the last six years with a small increase in 2006. <br />Figure A -12 also presents water levels for the well COY (alluvium). Water levels at the <br />COY well overall rose in 2006 likely due to an increase in recharge. The unconfined alluvial <br />aquifer generally responds gradually to recharge changes. The 2006 water -level elevations are <br />similar to the natural high water levels in 1985 and 1986. <br />Wells GP -5 and GP -6 are both completed in the QR aquifer. GP -5 is immediately <br />downgradient of A pit and GP -6 is immediately upgradient of the pit. Water -level data is tabulated <br />in Table A -1 in Appendix A. Figures A -13 and A -14 present water level versus time plots. Both <br />plots are fairly similar, with gradually rising water levels in wells GP -5 and GP -6 in 2006. An <br />overall rising trend had been observed during the period of above normal precipitation while an <br />overall smaller rise had been observed during the below normal precipitation prior to the fairly <br />steady levels the last few years. These responses are interpreted to be due to an increase in recharge <br />for a few years followed by a decrease in recharge.
