STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX (303)832-8106
July 24, 1997 DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
Mr. Greg Kuyumjian RESOURCES
White River National Forest
900 Grand Avenue Roy Romer
Governor
Glenwood Springs, Colorado James Lochhead
81602 Executive Director
Michael B Long
RE: Challenge Cost Share; Coal Basin Mine Division Director
Dear Mr. Kuyumjian:
The Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology is pleased to submit
the enclosed Challenge Cost Share proposal. As a result of
property exchanges, a large portion of the Coal Basin Mine is now
located on Forest Service lands. The Division has worked closely
with Forest Service personnel to develop reclamation concepts at
Coal Basin. We have been active with local citizens groups,
addressing reclamation plans and concepts. We are also sponsoring
a community based volunteer tree planting effort in order to help
develop and maintain long term community interest in Coal Basin.
Minerals and Geology is in the process of accomplishing reclamation
of this previously permitted coal mine with funds provided through
Federal Bankruptcy proceedings. However, the funds currently
available may eventually prove insufficient to complete the
reclamation process. The Challenge Cost Share provides a unique
opportunity to foster the Federal / State partnership created in
order to accomplish reclamation of this site.
Please feel free to contact David Bucknam or me if you require
further information, or have questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Steve Renner
Project Manager
CC: Michael Long
David Bucknam
Loretta Pineda
Cheryl Linden
Kevin Riordan, USFS
