QPPENT OF lye'tim United States Department of the Interi.or
f9
a
OFFICE OF SURFACE MINING
M4gCH 3`ea Reclamation and Enforcement
IN REPLY REFER TO, 1999 Broadway, Suite 3320
Denver,Colorado 80202-5733
December 1, 1997
Mr. Eric Lane
State Weed Coordinator
Colorado Department of Agriculture
700 Kipling St. , Suite 4000
Lakewood, Colorado 80215
In re: Grant Application for Weed Management: Colorado
Department of Natural Resources, Division of Minerals &
Geology / Pitkin County (Coal Basin Mine)
Dear Mr. Lane:
The Colorado DMG and Pitkin County have entered into a
partnership agreement to control the spread of noxious weeds at
the Coal Basin Mine in western Pitkin County (west of Redstone,
CO) . As you are aware, DMG has the statutory responsibility to
reclaim this now abandoned coal mine.
The United States Department of the Interior, Office of Surface
Mining (OSM) , is responsible for overseeing the coal mining
regulation and reclamation functions of DMG. Additionally, OSM
has been directly involved with the Coal Basin Mine for many
years due to our independent duty to ensure the protection of
Federal lands (in this case, US Forest Service property) . We are
very supportive of the efforts of DMG to restore this abandoned
mine by eliminating environmental hazards (including noxious
weeds) and achieving a postmining land use that will benefit the
residents of Pitkin County and users of the White River National
Forest.
An integral part of accomplishing successful reclamation of this
site is the control of noxious weed infestations which are
appearing at the lower elevations of the mine. We consider
ourselves a partner with DMG in this effort, and are willing to
provide staff resources to help in controlling or monitoring weed
populations. We are also investigating funding from the
Department of the Interior to provide further financial
assistance to this undertaking.
