December '), 1997
To Whom It May Concern;
I am writing this letter as a show of support for the effort being made to obtain funds to address
the weed/thistle problem on the Mid-Continent property presently under reclamation west of
Redstone, Colorado. As you probably know, the US Forest Service is presently trying to acquire
this property for public use, use which includes grazing for cattle presently permitted on the
USFS lands that totally surround this property.
As pool rider for the Coal Basin Cattlemen's Assn., I can verify that lands immediately adjacent
to this property are some of the better grazing lands within this range allotment. Also, as a
permitted hunting outfitter in this area, I can also attest to the importance of the these lands for
wildlife, especially deer and elk.
It would be very beneficial for the people of Colorado, Cattlemen, and Wildlife to not only have
this property as an added asset if the weeds were replaced with grass and natural forage, but also
to prevent the spread of this weed patch. Since something on this property, probably the
minerals in the soil of the reclaimed land, is a strong attractant to cattle, deer, and elk, it is only a
matter of time till the animals spread these weeds/thistles onto the adjacent forest.
Thank you for your consideration of this problem. Any money spent to eliminate these weeds
would be money well spent.
Sincerely,
dL,
Mike Schilling
Avalanche Outfitters
11382 Hwy.133
Carbondale, CO 81623
970-963-2942
