The funds
will be used to finance construction of a reclamation project designed to remediate an identified
hazard at the Coal Basin Mine. This hazard potentially threatens public health and safety, and
poses environmental risks.
The Division is proposing to alleviate the potential of a land slide from occurring on a portion of the
Old Refuse Pile immediately above and adjacent to Dutch Creek. There is no money available from
the reclamation bond to perform this project.
Enclosed is a description of the proposed Project at the Coal Basin Mine. The final stages of project
development will be undertaken in the late spring and early summer of 1999. Construction will
begin in late 1999 or 2000.
Thank you for your consideration of this request for Civil Penalty Funds. Please feel free to contact
myself, David Bucknam or Steve Renner if you have questions or comments, or should you require
additional information.
Sincerely,
Michael B.
