STATE C--j-'rc- COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY P

Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX:(303)832-8106 WN
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
December 4, 1997
RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Governor
MEMO
James S.Lochhead
Executive Director
TO: Michael Lon David Bucknam Michael B.Long
g Division Director
FROM: Steve Renner :•-
RE: National Arbor Day Foundation Grant
Earlier this fall, the National Arbor Day Foundation decided to award the Division a grant for the
purpose of planting trees at the Coal Basin Mine. They apparently sent the paper work earlier in
the fall, however it was never received. Recently they sent a duplicate copy, the original of which
is enclosed.
The grant will provide $7,500 for the purpose of planting trees at Coal Basin on National Forest
lands. It is my understanding that the money is to be used for purchasing trees. The cost of
planting the trees would be paid from other sources, presumably the bond money. The permit and
the Findings documents specify a tree planting rate on reclaimed lands, so it does not appear that
planting of trees with bond money is an inappropriate use of those funds. The $7,500 should be
sufficient to purchase between six and nine thousand trees.
The white attachment pages (Amendment No. 7) to the Collection Agreement should be modified
on a typewriter at"Amend"A. The National Arbor Day Foundation...", by deleting my name and
address, and inserting:
Mr. Michael Long
Director
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street Room 213
Denver, Co 80203
Strike " USDA Forest Service."and insert"Division of Minerals and Geology"under the signature
block at the bottom of each page. I have discussed both of these changes with Kevin Sander of
the Arbor Day Foundation, and they agreed to both.
Mike should sign both copies of Amendment No. 7, sending one copy to the National Arbor Day
Foundation, attention Mr. Kevin Sander, at the address shown on page 3 of the Collection
