In 1997,
approximately 5,000 trees were planted within the Basin. Most of the trees were planted by
volunteers at areas where other reclamation activities had been finished.
National Arbor Day Foundation has offered a grant in the amount of$7,500 for the purpose of
purchasing and planting trees in Coal Basin. We have agreed to use these funds to purchase trees
and to help underwrite planting expenses. Trees purchased with these funds will be planted on
properties managed by the U. S. Forest Service. We understood that this money was to have
been provided by April 15, 1998. It will be expended at the discretion of the Division in the
summer of 1998.
In late 1997, we spoke by phone and discussed the possibility of planting a John Denver
Memorial grove within Coal Basin as part of the reclamation process. This planting would have
been accomplished using the $7,500 previously committed by National Arbor Day Foundation,
and with volunteers doing the planting. Since that time, the concept has gone through a number
