that the prospect of a volunteer type organization participating in the reclamation of Coal Basin
will act as a catalyst for future and increased community support and awareness of the
reclamation processes being implemented at the mine site. The DMG will approach local
community groups to seek their support and active participation in the project. It is anticipated
that community members will be available on at least a periodic basis to assist in planting and
construction activities as well as discussions of the historical, environmental and development
aspects of the area.
The Crew Members will camp during the duration of the project. There is an established U.S.
Forest Service campground at Redstone, which may be available for use. If not, or if more
convenient, camping on forested portions of the mine site is feasible. The Division will provide
approximately $4,000 to feed the Crew during the duration of the project. The Crew will
prepare its own meals.
Conclusion
The Coal Basin Mine operated for nearly forty years in a high altitude environment which is
subject to large scale erosive processes. Mining activities, particularly as they related to haul
road drainage and construction of the mine bench outslopes, contributed sediment to the streams
which drain Coal Basin.
The Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology is in the process of accomplishing reclamation
of the Coal Basin Mines. To a large extent, the objective of the reclamation being conducted
at the mine entry areas is to improve the watershed characteristics of Coal Basin. In order to
accomplish watershed improvement, planting of a large number of trees and shrubs, and
construction of sediment retention structures is necessary. Funding is unavailable to accomplish
this magnitude of restoration via independent contractors. It is apparent that only with the help
of an organization such as A*NCCC will sufficient numbers of trees and shrubs be planted and
an adequate number of sediment control structures be constructed to provide the level of
protection needed to enhance the quality of Coal Basin.
Appendix:
Coal Basin Mine Map -- and Description of Mine
Cross-section of Tree and Shrub planting
M:\imp\sgr\ancccap.3
9
