The cuttings will be soaked in a nearby water source for a week, and then be transplanted into
trenches hand dug by the Crew. The trenches will generally be constructed perpendicular to the
gully length, and be nine inches wide by nine inches deep. The cuttings will be placed in the
trenches, and the trenches will then be backfilled by shovel and compacted by foot.
It is estimated that construction of the sediment control structures will require one week of Crew
time.
Coal Basin Watershed Improvement Project
Project Timeline
DATE TASK
July 7-11 ♦ Setup camp
♦ Organize Equipment and Supplies
♦ Tour Site
♦ Training
♦ Begin tree/shrub planting at Mine #4 area
July 14-18 ♦ Continue tree/shrub planting
♦ Education Seminars begin
July 21-25 ♦ Continue tree/shrub planting
♦ Construction of erosion control structures
July 28-30 ♦ Complete project
♦ Project and camp site clean-up
♦ Appreciation Event
Teamwork
Successful completion of the proposed project is dependent upon team work and interpersonal
cooperation. For example, while some team members are planting trees, other crew members
will be preparing the trees for planting, or perhaps installing the sun shades. Certain efficiencies
are gained by splitting the planting effort into two or three sub-tasks so that the overall project
goals are accomplished by all.
Fulfilling Statutory Requirements
The DMG is statutorily charged with protection of the hydrologic balance in and near coal
mining operations. Sediment generation as a result of mining related erosion has been identified
as a contributory factor regarding water quality concerns within Coal Basin. Completion of the
project will directly impact the erosional processes in the Basinby helping to disperse the surface
flow of runoff water, hold soil particles in place and trap sediment, thus helping to reduce the
impacts to local water quality as a result of mining related activities.
7
