STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1 313 Sherman St, Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX.(303)832-8106
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
MEMO RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Governor
December 7, 1998 James S Lochhead
Executive Director
TO: Construction Dewatering Permit File Coal Basin Mine Michael B Long
 Division Director
FROM: Steve Renner, Project Manager2
RE: Construction Dewatering Permit(COG-070907) Deactivation
The Division of Minerals and Geology applied for, and received, a construction dewatering
permit during construction of the Dutch Creek Diversion at the Coal Basin Mine. The Dutch
Creek Diversion was built as a part of the on-going reclamation process being administered by
Minerals and Geology at the Coal Basin Mine. Construction of the Diversion has been
completed, and Minerals and Geology wishes to terminate the permit.
Ground water discharges to Coal Creek occurred for about a week during the fall of 1998. A
sample of the discharge was taken and analyzed for the constituents specified in the permit
application package. The sample results were forwarded to the Water Quality Control Division.
Water Quality Control Division was contacted, and the desire to terminate the permit was
communicated to them. Based upon this phone conversation, it is my understanding that the
permit will automatically expire on January 31, 1999. It is also my understanding that no further
sampling or other actions are required of Minerals and Geology in regard to this permit, as
construction has been completed.
Minerals and Geology therefore understands that its obligations under permit COG-070907 are
complete, that no further actions need to be accomplished, and that the permit will expire of its
own accord on January 31, 1999.
CC: David Bucknam
Cheryl Linden
Rick Koplitz
c:\sgr\clbsn\gwpmtend.wpd
