The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34,
Article 33, Section 118, Paragraph 3, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on September 14,
2012, an application to revise coal mining operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine was considered
complete for the purposes of filing. All review and comment periods as provided in the Act and
the Regulations initiate from this date of filing.
This permit revision proposes to incorporate federal coal leases COC -61209 and COC -37210 into
the Bowie 2 permit. These lease modifications expand the mine plan to the north allowing for four
addition longwall panels to be mined. The longwall panels will be oriented east and west. The
permitted area will increase by 896.0 acres and the affected area will increase by 609.0 acres. The
mineral ownership in the lease modification areas is all federally owned. Surface ownership in the
new lease area is 728.0 acres private land and 168.0 acres federal land. No surface disturbance is
proposed with this revision.
The Underground coal mining operation is on land located approximately 5 miles Northeast of
Paonia, Colorado. The permit area is further described as follows:
Portions of Sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, and 22, Township 13 South, Range 91 West
of the 6th P.M. Portions of Sections 33 and 34, Township 12 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
The above - mentioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle map of Bowie.
A copy of the revision application is available for public inspection at the Paonia Public Library, 2
Third Street, Paonia, CO 81428, and at the Division office.
