OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: M- 1977 -439
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE: September 12, 2012
This was a routine inspection of the Home Office Pit, DRMS permit M1977-439, a 112c sand and gravel permit
now operated by Martin Marietta Materials (MMM). The inspection was conducted by Eric Scott of DRMS at
the request of MMM representative Julie Mikulas to discuss the reclamation status of ponds and river frontage
located in the southeastern part of the permit. DRMS visited the site with MMM representative Julie Mikulas,
and others, at approximately 0945. The site is currently active, and is also processing material from the
adjacent Overland Ponds site to the south (M2002 -081).
MMM wants to define any remaining earthwork required along the shoreline of these southeastern ponds to
facilitate the re- permitting of this area by the City of Greely for reclamation as developed water storage
reservoirs. No mining has taken place in this area of the permit for many years and the vegetation in these areas
is now well established with routine maintenance such as mowing and weed control activities ongoing. Some
Russian olive trees were observed along the shoreline areas that will need to be removed before a final release
could be approved, but MMM is aware of this requirement and has been actively removing these trees.
As discussed on -site with MMM representatives, the only remaining earthwork required to meet the reclamation
standard will be to insure that the final shoreline meets the reclamation standards set in 3.1.5(7) of the
construction materials rule which states that "from 5 feet above to 10 feet below the waterline slopes shall not
be steeper than 3:1 ". This will require the re- dressing of some shoreline areas where it was observed that wave
action has created steep ledges over the years since the pond was completed, and re- sloping of the shoreline in
some areas where the slope is likely steeper than 3:1 within five feet of the waterline. Re- worked areas will, of
course, need to be reseeded with the approved reclamation vegetation.
As for the river frontage /recreational trail that is currently included in the permitted area — it appears that this
area has been unaffected by mining activities and would easily be able to be released if the proper request and
supporting information is submitted to the Division. If this area is released, the eastern boundary of the permit
area will need to be clearly re- marked or fenced to define the remaining permit area/boundary.
Inspection Contact Address
Julie Mikulas
Martin Marietta Materials, Inc.
1800 N.
